Monteverdi and Carissimi are rightly the two best-known Italian composers of the 17th century. We now recognise their importance in developing new vocal styles both for solo vice and for ensembles. Alongside vividly festive psalm settings by Monteverdi, Emma Kirkby sings celebratory motets and laments by Carissimi and Strozzi. Emma joins YBC in Carissimi’s Jephthe which concludes with the famous solo and choral laments.
