Joseph Haydn- Stabat Mater
Michael Haydn - Requiem

Michael (left) and Joseph Haydn
Yorkshire Baroque Soloists
conducted by Peter Seymour
Joseph Haydn’s Stabat Mater is one his most expressive compositions and, as with the Michael Haydn Requiem, this is its first YBC performance. Stabat Mater enjoyed immediate success and became Haydn’s most well-known sacred work. Joseph asked that his younger brother’s Requiem be performed at his funeral and it is clear that the piece, written in 1771, also influenced Mozart’s own Requiem. Both pieces have unusual and telling scorings, the Stabat Mater calling for a pair of cor anglais whilst the Requiem requires four trumpets.
