Yorkshire Bach Choir's recent recording of Monteverdi's Vespro Della Beata Vergine presents the version for voices and continuo only, one of those envisaged by Monteverdi when collecting together his music for the 1610 publication. This version is distinguished by the substitution of the 6-part Magnificat for the 7-part one performed by YBC previously. One result of this version is that the focus falls even more clearly on the voices, both solo and choral, and allows Monteverdi to present the text with a dazzling clarity.
