The ancient tale of Dido, the tragic Carthaginian queen, provided ready inspiration for Henry Purcell in his enduring Dido and Aeneas. Purcell’s short opera (given here in a concert performance) is filled with vivid orchestral music, supporting characters and memorable choruses. Though only one of his works was published in his lifetime, Jeffreys’ anthems include poetic settings of a range of English texts including Whisper it Easily, Rise Heart! The Lord is Risen and How Wretched is the State. The Biber Mystery Sonatas, also known as the Rosary sonatas, are a pinnacle of the baroque violin repertoire and we could look for no better interpreter than Lucy Russell, leader of Yorkshire Baroque Soloists.
