Hubert Parry's haunting Songs of Farewell, is surely one of the 20th Century’s most beautifully crafted choral works. Following the horrors of the First World War, Parry sets poetry from a range of poets (including Donne, Vaughan and Campion) which seems to reflect not only on themes of grief and sorrow but also the prospect of a better, more enlightened future. Alongside the Parry we present a range of other wonderful choral music which also mixes an elegiac tone with words of hope, including Elgar’s They Are at Rest, Stanford’s Three Motets, Wood’s Hail Gladdening Light, Harris’s Bring Us O Lord, Rutter ‘s Hymn to the Creator of Light and Richard Shephard’s Never Weather Beaten Sail.
